Huron Valley Community Theater presents Really Rosie at the Milford High School Little Theater.
The musical, a brilliant collaboration of storyteller Maurice Sendak and singer/songwriter Carole King, has delighted audiences since the 1970s. The community theater production features a cast of elementary and middle school students from the Huron Valley community.
The story is based on a demonstrative little girl who used to sing and dance on the stoop of her building, whom Sendak watched growing up in Brooklyn. It also reflects Sendak’s unsentimental view of childhood, where kids may not get along, and life isn’t always fair.
Rosie is determined to be the biggest star around! It’s an aimless July day on Avenue P in Brooklyn, and Rosie is ready to make the movie of her life with the help of her little brother, Chicken Soup, and her friends, Kathy, Alligator, Johnny, and Pierre. The show features songs like “Really Rosie,” “Alligators All Around” and “Chicken Soup and Rice.”
Really Rosie is all about these neighborhood kids who just don’t have anything very urgent to do on a summer day,” said Director Doug Marquis. “That’s the kind of childhood I remember. We have some awfully talented young folks in our cast, who understood that right away. We’ve had a lot of fun in rehearsals. The kids have picked up the songs very quickly, and we think the show will bring a smile to a lot of faces.”
Really Rosie will be presented at the Milford High School Little Theater at 7 p.m. Oct 16; 2 p.m. and 7p.m. Oct 17; and 2 p.m. Oct 18. Tickets are $9 or $7 for students and seniors. Tickets for Really Rosie are also available at www.hvcommunitytheater.org
